“Be loud about the things that are important to you” ~ Karen Walrond

She was supposed to be working against a tight deadline as per strict instructions from Leia, after having put off her photo submission for a prestigious photography contest, but was failing miserably. The folder with the finalized selection of photographs from her tour in Africa glared from her Macbook, but instead of focusing on narrowing down on her selection, her attention was elsewhere.

One area in particular, sitting at the table in the dining room in Arnav’s penthouse. With its open floor plan, the kitchen was to her left and the great room on the right, her gaze, though, kept wandering straight ahead to the opening leading in from the main hallway. Her eyes yearning for Arnav to come strolling in flashing his handsome signature tugged smile as he always did returning home from work whenever she was here.

It didn’t help that she had surrounded herself with silence since her arrival after wrapping up at the gallery around seven o’clock, which was a couple of hours ago. She couldn’t remember a time when she had sat around like this. But after what happened a couple of nights ago, she was a bit anxious, and had foregone turning on the music or switching on the television like she normally would.

She glanced over to the great room, her eyes landing on the corner where she had found Arnav sitting with a drink in his hand a couple of nights ago on Wednesday. Seeing him lost in deep thought staring out the window, where he hadn’t noticed her walking up to him, she had known all was not well. He didn’t even need to say anything for her to realize things hadn’t gone as either of them had expected with his family. The conversation had affected him, and she couldn’t fault him.

Which was why she had walked away leaving their argument unfinished, as he wasn’t in the right frame of mind to have a rational discussion. And, the last thing either of them needed were hurtful words uttered that they would regret after all was said and done.

But they needed to talk before going into an extremely jam packed weekend. She didn’t want it to linger over them in the coming days where they had a lot going on to get things in order for their move to Rose Hill and their close friends’ engagement dinner party on Sunday at Leia’s parent’s home. It needed to be tonight. But, leave it up to Arnav to work late like he had last night, sneaking inside the loft at close to eleven o’clock. They had merely exchanged a few words before he crashed out on the bed out of sheer exhaustion after a long day.

She knew he would be home soon based on a text she received from him a couple of hours ago stating he would meet her here after the event he was attending wrapped up.

As her phone lit up with his message stating that he was in the car on his way home, she could feel her heart beating rapidly against her chest. Sending him a quick reply with a kissing emoji, she took a deep breath.

Knowing well what was ahead of her, she wasted no time in immersing herself in picking a photo for submission. It was a no brainer having had set aside her favorite photo months prior with this particular contest in mind. She spent a few minutes applying her final touch-up. Just when she was satisfied with the photo after giving it another glance over, Arnav came into view dressed in his usual business attire. A classic custom-fitted navy suit with a white shirt, minus the tie, with a couple of buttons open at the neck. She wouldn’t be surprised if he had shoved the tie in his jacket pocket or the front pouch of his briefcase.

As always, she was rewarded with his smile, and as always, in spite of it being four months into their relationship, it never failed to melt her heart every single time.

“There’s my sexy AF girlfriend, already in her nightly attire.” He winked, coming to stop in front of her, and rested his hands at the edge of the dining table.

“Someone’s in a good mood,” She slouched back, folding her arms across her chest. Her gaze followed his, at something having caught his attention, adorning a sly smirk. It wasn’t her laptop, but her chest with her cleavage on full display courtesy of her skimpy camisole. She didn’t bother fixing it as he slipped off his jacket, and draped it over the chair.

“How did things go at your event? It went on quite late.” She asked as he dropped a kiss on top of her head, then took a seat beside her.

“The usual schmoozing, and walking away with a few prospects on closing in on a couple of high profile properties. And, since we were hosting the event with the developer, I needed to stay till the end.” He leaned in closer, resting his chin on her shoulder. “What are you working on? I’ve never seen that picture before… one of yours?”

She smiled, and nodded, “This week sort of slipped away, and I need to submit this before midnight.” Seeing him look up at her questioningly, she clarified. “It’s for the annual photo contest that I had mentioned to you a few weeks back. I had a few of my favorites saved for this submission. It’s a big one.” She shrugged with her finger tracing circles on the keyboard.

“If this is the one you’re submitting, you’re going to bring home the prize. The colors of the jungle, the pack of the mighty lions, are all so vivid. Despite the darkness, you’re held captive wondering what happened next.” He placed a kiss on her shoulder, “Now stop looking at me, there’s not much time left for you to get this in.”

Seeing that she was still sitting there like a statue, he pulled away, and sat back, motioning to her laptop.

How was it that he had a knack for understanding the depth of her photography without her explaining it?

“Just a few minutes,” She said, then turned to face her screen, opening the submission page. “This was meant to be done before you got here, but…”

“You were distracted.” He simply stated, before going quiet as he stared straight ahead over at the great room.

There was no questioning what was on his mind, similar to her, he was recalling Wednesday night. Perhaps this would make him open up when she broached the topic of contention with him.

As she was attaching her photo to the online form already filled out by Leia earlier, the sound of his chair scraping against the floor had her peek a glance in his direction.

His shoulders slumping with one hand pushing back his hair, and the other on his phone. A message caught his attention, as he leaned forward with both hands working on replying at super speed. The man was skilled with how efficiently he navigated through his work on a mobile device without missing a beat.

“All done, and now, I’m all yours to kick off our weekend.” She proclaimed a few moments later with a wide smile, closing her laptop.

“I love the sound of that.” He placed his phone on the table, and took her hand in his.

Seated at the edge of her chair, she leaned forward and embraced him, and his arms instinctively tightened around her. Neither was in a rush to let go, staying in each other’s arms.

“Now, tell me how was your day?”

He sat back in his chair after hearing her question, and rested his ankle on the opposite knee, then rubbed his forehead.

“Where to begin?” It was a statement rather than a question. “I had a meeting at GI this afternoon, and saw your father,” He shook his head, “Scratch that, I saw NK.”

“Did Daddy say anything?” She couldn’t stop herself from blurting out, aware this was the first time they were meeting after Khushi spoke to her father.

“It was NK that I met with, not your father,” He said, “He was all business, not a word about us, or you, which means there wasn’t anything said about our upcoming move.”

“That’s good, I guess.”

He laughed as she gave him an awkward shrug not sure what to make of her father and Arnav’s interaction.

“I suppose you can look at it that way,” He placed his index finger on his phone in front of him, then spun it around. His gaze dropped to the spinning device, “Then right before I was leaving for the event this evening…”

“My father called?”

“Not yours, mine. Papa thought I would be home, and wanted to check in on me,” He paused, “It was the first time that we connected since Wednesday.”

She said nothing, seeing him a bit despondent staring ahead at nothing in particular. Her heart feeling heavy as he began to speak, his tone soft.

“I don’t ever recall disappointing my parents. Always doing my best not to get into trouble, given they had enough to deal with. I did well in school, helped around the house, being there for my grandparents and my sister. Even going as far as working my ass off after losing my athletic scholarship so not to put any financial burden on my parents. I was determined to succeed in order to take care of my family and make their dreams come true. They deserved it, especially my parents, my mother, for all their sacrifices over the years to give my sister and I a better life in this country. And now, for the first time in my life I have let them down.”

Her eyes met his pained ones. As she leaned in closer to him, placing her hand on his thigh, his body tensed up. Taking his hand in hers, she squeezed it.

“My love, you mean the world to your family, they love you. This is just a case of different viewpoints. Trust me, disagreements between parents and children are bound to happen. You have to give it some time, I’m sure they’ll understand.”

“But, Khushi, you didn’t hear him today. He didn’t have to come out and directly say anything, I could sense his disappointment. To be honest, time isn’t going to help. Not in this situation with their traditional views on marriage. It’s going to make it worse. This one decision of mine is going to come in between my family and I, that I’m certain of. Unless I… we…” He stood abruptly, not able to say what could put an end to the objection from both sets of parents.

He raked his hand through his hair, and began to pace in front of her with burdened shoulders.

She intently watched on, continuing to sit in her chair, then decided to raise the question that had been left unanswered. There was no avoiding it any longer.

“Arnav, I’ll ask you again, are you second guessing your decision?”

He stilled with his back to her, before slowly turning to face her. She tilted her head slightly, urging him to open up as he had moments before. They needed to be honest with each other just as they have been since they met.

“No, I am not.” He stated with conviction, tightening his hand into a fist. “What I need people to understand is that I don’t want to go down the path of following the pre-ordained decision that is an accepted tenet of our so-called society. People might find it hard to understand my stance on the institution of marriage, seeing I’ve had perfect role models with my grandparents and parent’s marriage. However, that does not mean that’s the path I have to follow. For once in my life, I want to live life for me with the woman I love the way I deem fit. It’s a choice that I’ve made for myself.”

A small smile curved her mouth. Yes, he had been struggling with the adversity that had been brought upon the people he loved due to his choice. But, she admired him for staying true to himself as she had hoped he would.

Pushing back her chair, she stood.

“At the end of it all, that’s what matters, my love. It’s your life, and only you can decide for yourself how you want to live it. You shouldn’t be forced into something you don’t believe in.”

“What about you?”

He caught her off guard with his question as well as the unmistakable glint in his eyes.

“What about me?” She frowned, repeating his question.

“Aren’t you pushing aside a future that you had envisioned for yourself for my sake?”

“No, not at all,” She shook her head, rushing to him, and cupped his cheeks. “I thought we had agreed what was best for us. For our future.”

“We did, Khushi.” He paused, and for a moment looked regretful. “I can’t help but think that maybe my mother is right.”

“About?” She interrogated as he looked away. “Talk to me, Arnav, please.”

“I am being unfair to you by not marrying you, and formalizing our relationship. And, what about our child…”

Her mouth dropped open, followed by a slow burn of anger beginning to rise in her chest “What the fuck?!”

It was her turn to pace, continuing to swear under her breath, trying to absorb what he had said. She had already heard the so-called consequences from her father, and didn’t need a play by play of what his family might have said. She knew.

Not one to ever hold back, she faced him, and looked him in the eye.

“You listen to me, Arnav Singh Raizada, and listen good, because I am only going to say this once.” She waited for his acknowledgment which came with a nod. “Unfair would be if you forced me to go along with your choice. But, that’s not the case. Yes, like the rest of the world, I was raised with the notion that marriage was a path in life that one followed. Though, seeing my father’s two failed marriages, it’s never appealed to me. I really don’t get what all the fuss is about. For me, I could take it or leave it. And, don’t think of this as a compromise from my end. It’s not. I understand you, and agree with your choice. As well as being more than capable of dealing with those that might have something to say about it to me. It’s not their life, but mine.” She stated firmly, then her expression softened, “It’s my choice to start our journey as life partners as we move into our new home. The beginning of our forever.”

She put her arms out, “Are you with me, Arnav?”

He stared at her for a long moment, allowing her words to soak in. She meant it with all of her heart. She didn’t need marriage to be with Arnav. He was all that she desired, and she knew he felt the same when without saying anything, he pulled her into his arms.

She found her place of solace, resting her head right above his heart as her arms wrapped around his back.

For a long, endless moment, they remained that way.

He pressed his lips against her hair, and finally whispered, “I’ll always be with you, Khushi, as long as you’ll have me.”

They were committed to one another. Not only did she believe in him, but trusted him to do what was right by her and their relationship.

As the weekend proceeded, it was hard to overlook that he continued to be affected with not being understood by his parents. It was upsetting to stand by and watch him trying to come to terms with how his relationship with his parents will suffer due to the choice he made for himself.

Arnav was physically with her, but his mind and heart weren’t. On Saturday, he had been detached when they met up with a designer at the penthouse. The joy of their upcoming move was sucked out of him. He had left her to make all of the decisions to customize the space to their taste. She had gone along with it, already being aware of the changes he wanted incorporated.

But, it didn’t stop there.

There were several instances in the past couple of days where he would zone out, unaware of what was happening around him. The worst was yesterday where he had distanced himself throughout the intimate gathering to celebrate their friends’ engagement, and kicking off their upcoming wedding in less than four weeks. He had opted to keep to himself. By no means was he rude or disrespectful to Leia and Aseem’s family and the few close friends present, he just wasn’t himself.

Despite her best efforts, she couldn’t get across the wall he was beginning to build around himself.

Who better than her to know the impact of being at crossroads with your family. Relationships suffer. Her father and she had been at each other’s throats for years constantly arguing not seeing eye to eye on anything, causing them to drift apart in her teenage years. And, that’s not what she wanted for Arnav. Not when he had a loving and close-knit relationship with his family.

She would do anything in her power to wipe away the sadness that surrounded him these past few days. Hell bent on doing just that, she had arranged to go out to Long Island to meet Arnav’s mother. Alone.

It was a little after eleven o’clock when she pulled into their driveway, and got out of the car. A gust of cold air assaulted her as she walked up the steps to the front door. She wondered sardonically if she should take it as a sign of what was waiting for her. Laughing inwardly at the comparison as she did so.

Of course, she had been proven wrong the instant Harika opened the door without her having to knock or ring the doorbell.

“Welcome Khushi,” Harika greeted her with a warm smile, and an equally warm embrace. “Please come in, it’s chilly today.”

“Hi Auntie, it’s lovely to see you again.”

Harika moved to the side to let Khushi in. Khushi followed the same routine she had during her previous visit, by slipping out of her shoes near the front door, then took off her light fall jacket. She was about to hang it on the coat rack set near the entry, but Harika smiled, taking it from her.

“I guess I should have checked the weather before getting dressed this morning.”

Khushi looked down at her knee length, emerald green dress with short sleeves, compared to the comfy sweater and trousers that Harika was wearing. Clearly she hadn’t been thinking straight when she pulled the dress out of her wardrobe, still getting used to the change of weather. But then, dresses were her go to now that Shutter was open to meet with visitors coming through the gallery.

“Namaste Dadi.” Khushi waved, noticing Arnav’s grandmother dressed in a light yellow saree, walking down the stairs.

“Hello Khushi bitiya, we’re so happy that you’re here,” Dadi approached her after getting off the last step, and immediately engulfed her. “I hope there wasn’t any trouble getting here.”

“Not at all, the traffic was light since it’s after the morning rush though not sure what it will be like getting back to the city.”

“You drove here by yourself?” Dadi asked.

Khushi nodded, then looked over at Harika.

“I remembered Auntie mentioning her being home on Mondays, and I was hoping to speak with her, actually the both of you.”

“Of course, you are welcome here anytime,” Harika smiled, then led them to the living room. “Can I get you something to drink or eat, Khushi, Amma?” Harika asked after Dadi and Khushi sat down on the sofa.

Both women shook their head, and Harika took a seat on the chair beside where Khushi was seated.

“Hopefully you’ll be hungry in a little while, and we can have lunch together. The three of us.”

“Harika’s prepared something special, your favorite, Indo Chinese, after you called this morning about coming over.”

“That’s very sweet of you, thank you, Auntie. And, I would love to have lunch with both of you.” Khushi extended one hand towards Harika and the other to Dadi, squeezing their hands once they placed theirs in hers. “You must be wondering or probably know why I am here today.”

Harika looked over at her mother in law, then at Khushi, and nodded. While Harika opted not to say anything, Dadi responded.

“Arnav informed us about your upcoming move,” Dadi said with a small smile, “Congratulations, and I pray that Devi Maiya fills your home and your lives with happiness.”

“Thank you, Dadi, and as long as we have our family’s blessings with us,” She deliberately looked at Harika before continuing, “As well as support, then for sure we’ll be happy in our lives. But, that doesn’t seem to be the case at the moment.” She sighed and straightened her shoulders at the same time. “For as long as I can remember, and based on the childhood stories shared by my family, I’ve always been open and honest, sometimes too honest, but my intentions aren’t to hurt anyone’s feelings or be disrespectful. I do it in order to be understood as well as understand others point of view. I am aware that not everyone will share my opinion, and I respect that. I would hope that they would also respect mine. And, the choice which Arnav and I have made of not getting married isn’t a popular one.”

“Every single person in this house is delighted that Arnav has found someone that he wants to spend the rest of his life with. And, I’ll also be honest, I worried that my son would never settle down. Perhaps that is why I kept pushing him in hopes to get through to him. And then, you came into his life; I can’t thank you enough for showing Arnav that there’s more to life than his work.”

“While we’re still working on finding that work life balance, what helps in a relationship is that we’re both understanding and supportive of each other. Not just in our careers but in everything. Including in our views of how we see our future together. His outlook is as important as mine.”

“I knew it. Arnav was forcing his opinion on you. Didn’t I tell you Amma?” Harika blurted, “That’s why you agreed with his decision in not giving your relationship the proper name it deserves.”

“Absolutely not. This is a choice that we both made taking into consideration what marriage means to us. Arnav has witnessed two wonderful marriages, but I haven’t. What I have experienced is that there are no guarantees in life. Contrary to what our society dictates, not everyone wants or needs to be married. You can be in a lifelong committed relationship without a piece of paper.”

“But, it’s not how the world works, Beta,” Harika interjected, “As a woman, I would think you would want that assurance of being someone’s wife.”

“Assurance which many peg with a marriage certificate, doesn’t make one stay in a relationship. One can walk away… the woman that gave birth to me is a perfect example. She left my father and I without so much as looking back. So, tell me why should that matter to me? Why should I give importance to the institution over what Arnav and I share?”

Harika silently leaned further back in the chair, unable to answer Khushi.

“There are certain traditions that are a part of the circle of life which are carried from one generation to another. Times will change along with the outlook on this age old tradition, similar to my grandson, and while we might accept it, the road we have to walk along in the world that we live in, won’t be easy. Especially with the majority leaning on one side.” Dadi tilted her head, placing her hand on Khushi’s arm.

“Dadi, I am strong enough to face anything or anyone that might have an issue with our choice to not marry. I’ve been doing it all my life. As a Gupta, people don’t see me for who I am, they see my family name and what’s attached to it, making their own assumptions that I am a spoiled rich brat or privileged because I come from money.”

“But, they’re wrong.” Harika stated.

“Exactly, my point. The way I see it, people are always going to have a say or issue about something or another. They love gossip and drama, and those aren’t the people I associate with. It has never bothered me before, nor will it ever.” Her gaze moving from one woman to the other, until she met Harika’s, “What truly matters to me, to us, is our family keeping an open mind to understand our choice. I know it might be difficult given the dreams you’ve had for Arnav’s future, but think about what he’s going through right now. All he wants is his family’s support as he steps into a significant part of his life, sharing a future with the woman he loves in their new home.”

There was a long drawn out silence after that and after what seemed like an eternity, Dadi finally spoke.

“When you put it the way you do, it’s true, people will say what they want. It’s up to us to stand by our children, and if we are with them, they can’t be touched. And, who even cares about those types of people, they’re gossipers. We as a family need to share in Arnav’s happiness with Khushi.”

Tears shone in her weary eyes as Harika bowed her head. She was at a loss, mulling over her son’s decision from the moment he had come over to tell them. Along with her husband, she had found herself unsure on what was wrong or right. But maybe, there was no right or wrong.

Apologies, it looks like I have defaulted to a two week delivery of a new chapter with quite a bit on my plate at the moment. Please know, I will do my best to post as time permits.

All I can say is thank you for your support, and I hope you can reward me with your thoughts 😉

Till next time, keep smiling!

Love always,

Jigs

But, she admired him for staying true to himself as she had hoped he would.

Reading Khushi’s thoughts here lays to rest any doubt anyone may have had about her views on the choice Arnav and she have made. Views and traditions evolve over generations. They always have and they will continue to do so. Those caught up in the transition will always be wary, concerned about changing the status quo. That doesn’t mean that the change has to be a bad thing. Or that the status quo was a bad thing. As Harika mused at the end, “maybe there is no right or wrong.”

Dadi is right, if the family stands together, naysayers soon lose purchase. It’s when outsiders see a chink that they take salacious advantage of it.

I felt desperately sad seeing Arnav so lost and despondent. So long as you toe the line, all is good. It is a horrible feeling to believe you’re a “disappointment” to your parents. At any age. I’m glad Ashvath at least reached out to check on him.

Khushi is the best thing that has happened to him. At so many levels. She understands him, she roots for him, she fights for him. All this without losing her own sense of identity. Not at any point was she rude or disrespectful in her conversation with Harika and Dadi. She was forthright and rational. Admirably so. I for one am joining in Dadi’s blessings for their future.

    1. Ruchiji once again u have described every nuisance of this chapter so well.. I m mighty impressed by both Arnav & Khushi. 1st of all for being truthful to themselves & each other. Second for continuing honest conversation. No matter how blunt it is, they did it. As long as both of them keep doing these two things, their relationship will only become more strong.

If last time i was feeling bad for Arnav, this time i m hurting for him. A man, who from childhood loved his parents so much, did everything to keep them happy, it must b shattering for him to realise that he has disappointed them, so much so everything becomes awkward now. Here kudos to khushi for handling this whole situation, b it Arnav building a wall around him or going to have a chat with Raizadas, so maturely with compassion & patience. As u said Ruchiji, khushi was never rude yet she put across her pov so beautifully ki even Harika is forced to think , maybe there is no right or wrong. & This is d gist, both pov r right in their own way, whats matter is both povs need to respect other one & understand them too. Maybe your loved one is taking a different path from u, but what is more important path or destination. Kyunki destination toh happiness & fulfilment hi hai, path aap koi bhi choose karo.

    2. My dear Ruchi ,
You said it all & much more
I loved your review , as usual ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Happy to note that both Arnav & khushi are on the same page regarding marriage
I am relieved, thanks for that, jigs 🙌🏾
Kh gets him , really gets him, like how Arnav understands her work
      True soulmates 💕🥳🎉❤️
Felt it like role reversal, Arnav doesn’t want to disappoint his parents & dadi
while kh not only stands by her man, also becomes his spokesperson
Poor guy, he had been the model son to his hardworking parents, so feels bad
But to brood during Aseem ‘s engagement, ha ha , such a cutie 🥰
Why fear when khushi is here ?
( was reminded of an ad when angry little boy runs away from home
but friendly railway station master tempts him to go back home saying
Amma had prepared jalebis ) jalebi the boy exclaims in glee 😬

No matter what, parents can never be mad at children for long 😪
But it took the commitment & love she has for Arnav that made kh go meet his mom & dadi
Also her words that they would be happy in their new home & life with their blessings
      was touching 🥲

      Kuch toh log kahenge
As long as your family supports you,
rest of the world can go to hell
      Dear jigs ,
Thanks for the update but thought that Arshi would patch in a better ( ahem, ahem )
      way after morose Wednesday
      Waiting for Arshilicious update

          1. Lovely chapter Jigs. I am loving this strong Khushi. She wants to tackle problems head on. She doesn’t want to lose sleep over issues which can sorted by communicating. Her initial talk with Arnav and the later conversation with Harika and Dadi made sure that she is part of this union and it is also her responsibility to make it work. She has done the right thing by talking to Arnav’s mother and Dadi. Hope they can make Arnav’s father understand their POV and support the union.
The only person who can make it hard is……you know who. That maya Mahini. She won’t waste time in using it against NK and Khushi. I know, twins will support Khushi. Can’t wait to read positive reaction to the upcoming move.
You take care Jigs. Give us an update when you find time to write it. No rush.
            Cheers……

    1. Didn’t realize I got notified so quickly that I didn’t even sign in. Oh well.

I’m continuously in awe of how in tune Arnab and Khushi are with each other. Kyushu taking that drive out to meet with his mom should, if nothing else, confirm just his committed Khushi is to Arnav and their relationship. Hoping Harika comes around because family is more important than gossipers.

Looking forward to the next update, no matter how long it takes.

    1. Along with her husband, she had found herself unsure on what was wrong or right. But maybe, there was no right or wrong.

You summed it up so well. What ever Arnav was feeling, Khushi was able to feel his pain and understand him so well and she couldn’t stop herself from remediating this right for herself and Arnav’s next big steps. It’s the relationship that matters and everyone knows that but what ever reasons that society has in the name of the bond sometimes makes no sense. Khushi’s fathers both relationship failed and she has seen that first hand and she knows hers will not be like her parents and maybe that’s how she can relate to Arnav’s stance as well. Harika and we husband has a better relationship and they may have never seen anything that would suspect the society norms. Arnav is very practical and he probably thinks it’s nonsense and want to value what he has in life without names attached. Khushi definitely is a lovely partner for him in all sense and she completes in many ways. This may all go well with NK and Gupta family standing by them through and through but I still have a nagging feeling that Arnav will continue to harbor guilt. Looking forward to seeing what’s in store for them next!

  2. My Saturday has begun with a bang😍
What a fantastic chapter Jigs! They stuck to their decision through all the family objections. I understand what the families are worried about but I also understand why Arnav and Khushi have decided to be in a committed relationship without any legal certificate. Love how Khushi drove all the way to discuss with dadi and Harika – a woman’s perspective!
    Take care my friend 😘

    1. First off, Jigs – we will be happy with your two-week or multi-week delivery. You don so many hats, and this one definitely takes the back seat.

Jigs – this was a clear winner. There is so much of kashmakash all around, but yet we found a solid answer to the problem on hand – accepting that there is NO right or wrong in situations such as this.

Loved how Arnav and Khushi understand each other so well. Reading each other’s thoughts and giving space when needed. But when it was time to take things forward, Khushi did not hesitate in reaching out to the people who she knew mattered the most in hers and Arnav’s decision. The ladies of the family. Khushi arranged a visit and the three of them dealt with the matter respectfully. It warmed my heart that despite everything, Harika’s love for Khushi has not diminished even a tad bit. The Raizadas know that they have got another daughter now.

Niran has accepted the decision, but I am sure he does hold something against Arnav for taking this route. Such a contrast here – despite his failed marriages, he wants a socially acceptable status for his daughter. And the Raizadas seem to have finally come around (as much as they could) despite always being in a close-knit family. The bottom line is that one can argue endlessly for or against the topic, but would that keep the concerned people (Khushi and Arnav) happy? I am hoping, from now on, the situations will make the two carve their path forward, either towards marriage or not.

Jigs – fantabulous job at putting forth the topic and that awesome conversation between three generations. Khushi did an outstanding job herself, in taking this step forward.

      Love,
      Vini.

  3. Beautiful update…I guess Khushi explaining the things her way might ease out Harika’s dilemma and she might see the things in a different light…I’m sure she will eventually come to the terms that Arnav & Khushi chose a specific way to live their life and it’s better to support and keep her & their piece of mind intact than being upset & strain the relations…Arnav would be a happy guy, once he comes to know about this…I would say all is well that ends well…🤗💖

  4. Arnav’s parents are not happy that he is not getting married ever but is setting home with Khushi. This has unsettled Arnav and wonders if he influenced Khushi to his way. But Khushi reassured him that she was not forced to go with his choice ,it was hers too. But she realised that Arnav will not be happy if his family is not happy with his choice so she went to she his mother.
She told the grandmother and Harika that people will talk but as long as the family understand them and support them it will be ok and she told them that Arnav needs their understanding and support. Khushi was able to assure them that she was not forced by Arnav to go by his choice.
Thank you Jignasha for the update.

  7. Thanks for the update, was eagerly waiting. Very well written, loved the conversation between them and how well they understood each other without the other one voicing out their thoughts.
Marriage alone cannot guarantee the longevity of union of the two persons and no one better than Khushi knew this, what’s most important is trust and understanding between the couple. Glad that khushi realized that Arnav will not be happy if his family is not happy with his choice so she went to meet his mother and make them understand that the decision regarding the marriage is taken by both and Arnav is not forcing his views on her.
Looking forward to next update ❤

  8. Being conservative about the institution of marriage and forcing others to have a legal paper will not make Arnav and Khushi’s relationship stronger than it has already been. I just hope that after her conversation with Khushi, Harika also will understand this fact. I loved Dadi’s open-mindedness. She is truly one in a million.

  9. Every person has a right to live the life they want as long as they don’t harm others. Arnav & Khushi are in love and are committed towards each other. If they have decided to live their life together, without getting married it is totally their decision to make. More power to them for making such an unconventional decision. But we have seen from ages that every unconventional choice or thought has always been faced with opposition; at least in the beginning. If Arnav had hoped for NK and his parents to jump in joy at their decision to move in without (ever) tying the proverbial knot, then he had hoped wrong. He may blame his parents for not understanding him, but apparently, he doesn’t understand them either. In my opinion he & Khushi has every right to make a decision about their life, but he is wrong in expecting others (including his family) to accept it without even expressing their displeasure. He can’t have the cake and eat it too. The Raizadas & NK are quite cool about everything else, but they come from a traditional background. It will take some time for them to come to terms with their living arrangement. Once they see how happy their children are with each other, they will also realize how pointless it is to have a document dictate anyone’s life. I can understand Arnav’s hurt, but he should have seen it coming. He just needs to be patient with them. Khushi has shown much more resilience and understanding than him. I applaud her for driving all the way to meet Harika make her understand their stand. What is needed at this point from both the parties is a bit of understanding & patience. Walking out in anger or not trying to communicate has never solved any issues.

  10. Being old school thought its really very difficult for Harika to accept Arnav’s decision but I think she is right in her stance and both Arnav and khushi are also right its their life and they are the judge of their lives and ppl will always gossip whether you get married or not so the important thing is that their family support them and celebrate their happiness.

  12. When arnav expects his parents to understand and accept his decision, he should also be able to understand their wishes and feom where they are coming from.
There’s no right and wrong here…. maybe coz of all this marriage institution he got a wonderful family of his own , whereas khushi lost hers.

Its lovely how she went to convince Harika ….. mostly Harika might be worried that Arnav is stealing khushis dreams.

  13. Boy am I glad to have read the last three chapters together! With a quote like that in chapter 42, I was worried about the plot twist you were about to introduce. But it helps to see how things are turning out. The relationships are still there. United. And maybe, about to be stronger than what they ever were. So maybe, this plot twist was needed for the growth.

Having seen the bromance between Arnav and NK, it was painful to read that NK met with Arnav simply as a businessman. No doubt NK’s upset that his dream of seeing his baby girl being married is shattering. But can I just say, I loved how he handled all of the news Khushi delivered! He’s already walked the path of different choices with his daughter, and it shows that he’s learned from it. I loved how he expressed his pov. and decided that he will agree to disagree, but will always stand by his baby girl. And maybe that’s the strength Khushi needed to chat with Harika.

Harika said the same thing, but the delivery was harsh. She is a lovely woman and has her children’s, which includes Khushi now, best interest at heart. A mother doesn’t want any harm coming her children’s way, and from the point of view that she’s looking at, this time she chose to protect Khushi. And again, maybe, this was needed. These thoughts and societal pressure/names may have crossed Khushi’s mind when she made her decision, but not sure if it had when Arnav made his. So now as he and Khushi begin this new chapter of their life, both are on the same page and standing together in their choice after considering all angles. And as very well explained here, there’s no right or wrong to this decision. It’s just a way of how we perceive such situations. And as long as both of their thoughts and approaches are aligned, that’s all that matters in the long run. Glad Khushi’s able to see/understand both perspectives and took the step to meet with his family to bridge the gap in the viewpoints of both generations. The way she’s handled the conversation is commendable. And it seems she’s successful. Changes like that don’t happen overnight. And societal changes take years if not decades. It’s one step at a time, and the first one is made from their home.

On a different note, I have a feeling this will also bring NK and Arnav’s family closer. Both having the same views on the topic, but open to accepting a different view for their children’s happiness. And seeing how Khushi is being loved and accepted by Arnav’s traditional family, hope NK can open up to Arnav again as he did before he learned of this decision of theirs. I look forward to the beautiful evening that’s about to come our way when both families are together as one big family at Arnav and Khushi’s home. Their Ashiyana! 🏡❤️

P.s. It’s late from my end, but belated birthday wishes to your kiddos! 🙂 Don’t think one can ever go overboard with the balloons!

P.p.s Loved the banner for this chapter. Especially the effects on Arnav and Khushi’s pictures with Arnav’s face being blurred out. Perfectly represents Arnav being there physically, but not emotionally. And Khushi’s like the invisible strength, seeing through his internal turmoil, and going to bridge the difference.

Also, you put so much time and effort to not only write this story but also make it perfect with absolutely fitting banners and quotes. I may not be the right person to say it, but don’t think anyone will mind any frequency at which you decide to update. Simply thankful that you’re sharing it! ❤️🤗

  14. Nice chapter Jigs.

I hope that now Arnav’s parents, particularly Harika should accept the situation and support Arnav and Khushi.
Khushi’s heart to heart talk with both the elderly women was so warm to read.
If someone does not believe in a particular thing, what is the point of forcing that person to do it.

I do get where Harika is coming from. And it is really nice of her to think more about Khushi than Arnav.
But then it is what it is right. Maybe she can ask Arnav one promise that if in the future, a situation arises where he has to sign on the dotted line and legally marry Khushi, then he should do it immediately. One never knows what the future holds and keeping an open mind about it is always good.

And for now, the elders in both the families should happily celebrate their kids starting this new journey in their new home.

Happy Weekend Jigs. Hope AD gives you some respite and you get to enjoy the weekend.

  15. Amazing Update

Was happy to see Arnav and Khushi continue their conversation where they left off. Loved how honest and open were when they communicate which is the beauty of their relationship. Though in the beginning Arnav felt that he might be forcing his decision on Khushi thinking about his mother’s words, loved how Khushi made him understand that is not so. Till Khushi shared their decision of not getting married to NK, though he accepted it and said he will support Khushi and stand by her as long as she is happy, looks like he is not really happy with it which is why Arnav said he meet NK and not Khushi’s father.

Felt bad seeing Arnav shattered thinking who till now made his parents happy be it either his studies, career and did everything he can knowing how much they have sacrificed themselves for their children must have been disappointed seeing of him decide not wanting to get married. Loved how Khushi understood his unsaid turmoil and decided to take action and have a talk with Dadi and Harika alone. Loved how Khushi was honest at the same time not being disrespectful and rude explained both the women from their POV and told them society will gossip either way if they are married or not and both Arnav and Khushi will wade their way facing them and be happy as long as they have their family support and blessings which made Harika rethink about Arnav’s decision that probably there is no right or wrong in that situation. Loved Dadi’s talks and her thoughts hearing Khushi. Though both Dadi and Harika understood Khushi from where they are coming from, it will take some time for them to accept their decision wholeheartedly but one thing for sure is after this conversation between these three no matter what both their parents will support and stand by Arnav and Khushi come what may.

    Eager for the next one.

No problem jigs with you giving us two-week delivery. Can understand AD can keep busy. Please give us one whenever you can. We will be waiting.
    Take care.

Traditions do evolve and there can never be a one size fits all kind of solution to this question.
What matters more are people who are willing to discuss, to reach out, to attempt to clarify or even to support each other in different ways.

  20. Khushi is the perfect foil to Arnav. The true life partner who will pitch in whenever the need arises. This does not require a signed piece of paper. One core aspect of happiness is the understanding and cooperation of all members of the family. It is not a question of who is right or wrong but it is a matter of unconditional support of family members.

  21. The fact that Khushi and Arnav are always willing to take that extra step and make the other feel better, even if it involves having awkward conversations with the other’s family members, shows how strong their relationship is. It’s actually beautiful. Hoping Harika gives in to the happiness of her son and prioritizes that over society’s expectations. Can’t wait for their move in together.

  22. Loved the chapter, brilliant. Khushi is on the same wavelength as Arnav regarding life and marriage. Despondent Arnav who has always been with his family, now not in synch as feels like failure to his family. Mature Khushi goes to talk with Arnav mum and dadi as understands and has felt the effect of family estrangement. Glad that she’s able to make them understand and get blessings for her and Arnav new start of living together.

  27. A very apt chapter for Arshi in today’s world.
It is not what is right or wrong. It will always be judged & you will be under scrutiny all the while but what matters is the support & love of your loved ones and their understanding to your relationship. Here dadi has made a fair point in this context.

  28. Yes, indeed. There is no right or wrong, it is just a mirage, a feeling or thought. It is amazing how sibblings brought with same culture and values can and will have a different interpretation and opinion. And that’s okay. What’s not okay is for families to think that just because they have brought up their children with certain beliefs, their children should believe in their beliefs! Until the conversation Arnav had with his family, Arnav was so happy in his relationship with Khushi, though of course he is still happy in his relationship, he is also fighting an internal battle… A battle of not disappointing his parents, hoping he is not being unfair to Khushi (though she has assured him time and again)… is there a need for this battle? He should be ecstatic that things are moving ahead for khushi and him. But it appears that their happiness has been tainted (at least for now). Glad khushi stood by him and has taken the initiative to speak to Harika and Dadi. Hopefully the women will come round and make this a very happy occasion for A and K.
Lovely chapter as always. Hope you and your family are keeping well and safe.

  30. I’m an old school when it comes to these things. I even agreed with Harika…. but like dadi said .. when k puts it like that and simplifying it like she just did … who cares what they say because people out there are not living our life and they certainly aren’t paying our bills. … what matters is the two people in it and their family.
But I still harbor tiny winy hope that he will do her the right way. There are certain things for certain reason.

  32. Arnav’s feelings are so relatable. Often times, we give in to parental concerns / pressures (be it the choice of career or life partner or even simple things like what saree to wear!) only to not disappoint them. And it’s not wrong to want your parents’ approval – but the conflict Arnav is undergoing is between individual philosophies. And because this conflict does not really have a right vs wrong side (just like there is no point in getting married if you are committed, there is no point in not getting married either if you are committed) it cannot remain objective.
I loved how Khushi decides to stand up for Arnav and help explain his view point to this family members. Harika needs to understand, after all KKG knows what she is doing and cannot really be manipulated by anyone into doing something she doesn’t want ! That she supports Arnav in this decision is completely Khushi’s own choice and I admire her for that !

Let me forewarn you that this is going to be a big one as I am going to let out all my pent up emotions and feelings for this journey in a single comment. So please bear with me and sorry for doing this!!!

To start with, I am really glad that I decided to restart reading ‘Listed’ and underwent that journey all over again, that too continuously, so that I could keep up with what’s happening in the story and in the lives of Arnav and Khushi. I have to thank you though for this as I wasn’t expecting that I would still be able to read this, considering that you might have completed it and the story wouldn’t be accessible anymore. But nevertheless, I am glad I am back, on time, to continue reading this and be a part of this journey with you.

Now, coming to the story, well… from the beginning itself, it was pretty obvious that Khushi has had a dark and daunting past that has shaped up her life and the person that she is today, but the magnitude of it wasn’t known initially, which was revealed in the later chapters. As usual, I just loved Khushi’s character in this one and I like how you always have portrayed Khushi to be a very bold, brave, modern and a fiercely independent girl in all of your stories.
The way we are introduced to her world and to her passion of photography (her life – Shutter) was amazing. I just love the way she is so passionate about photography and had the guts to take that leap of faith to build a career out of it, despite the fact that she had an entire empire built by her grandfather and father at her disposal to take over. But she didn’t… and chose to go her own way and seek out her future. Though there might have been multiple reasons for her at that time to do so… but still I would say… Gutsy!!!

Coming to Arnav… What can I say about the man whom we all love and adore to death!! A self-made man, who has seen life from both the ends and yet made it to the pinnacle of success on his own. I think that’s why I fall in love with his character pretty easily. And to add to that his relationship with his family… the care, the concern and the love that he showers on his loved ones and the people dear to him just makes him all the more adorable!!! :-*>😊😊
Kind, caring, compassionate, witty, possessive, passionate and an astute businessman – That’s my man… Arnav Singh Raizada!!! 😉
From Arnav and Khushi’s first meet itself, it was pretty clear that the chemistry between the two would be crackling and then the subtle flirting didn’t really leave anything to the imagination now, did it? But I am glad that they took their own time to test waters, before deciding to see whether things would work between the two. Well, things definitely had to work between the two as both of them didn’t stand a chance, right? I mean if Rayna, in the first meet could establish that they had something going on and a really strong connection between them, then I guess they were just waiting for the chemistry to explode between them to do something about it!!

Next, coming to their families!! Both the Raizadas’ and the Guptas’ couldn’t have been more different just like chalk and cheese!! I mean, the Raizadas’ are such a close-knit family with Dadi, Ashvath, Harika, Rayna and Arnav being the adorbs!!
In fact, Dadi is such a sweetheart and both Rayna and Arnav share a special bond with her (Though I think Arnav is definitely her favorite!! 😉 ). What makes her more adorable is the fact that she keeps herself up to date with the latest technologies and younger generation’s fad!! Ashvath and Harika are an adorable set of parents who have given their children the wings to fly, yet have kept them rooted and down-to-earth. Arnav and Rayna both are perfect examples of their upbringing that despite seeing such success, they haven’t gotten that to their head.

Guptas’ on the other hand, are a different story altogether. Niran or NK, Khushi’s father is amazing and I love the way he loves all of his children and specially the way he showers or tries to show his love for Khushi as he realizes that somehow Khushi had been wronged unknowingly by him!!
The Guptas’ are by no means what we term as a conventional family as we see that Khushi was never able to associate herself as one. Though for her NK, her grandfather and the twins, Devesh and Eira, were still her own and what she could call as family! But seeing that Samaira and Mahini, both in their own ways have scarred Khushi’s perception of family, we should be glad that she still understands what a family entails.
Nothin much can be said about Mahini knowing that what she did to Khushi was abominable yet she might have done that to secure her children’s interest. But still Khushi was just a child when NK married Mahini and she just needed a mother’s love which Mahini could never give her. The twins though, Devesh and Eira just love their Mimi Di and I hope that the love that they gave Khushi might have lessened some amount of pain for Khushi, if not entirely, in her childhood. I just hope and pray that the bond that these three share always stays blessed like this!!

Now Arnav and Khushi’s relationship is something that you have shown very beautifully and the progression of their relationship from one step tp the other was so organic. I loved how Arnav had been so understanding and patient in terms of Khushi’s past and gave her the much needed time and space to open up to him. And once he came to know about her past, then also the pain that he felt for little Khushi makes me want to smother him with hugs and kisses!! 😘😘🤗
Both Arnav and Khushi were also wary of the fact that they come from very different family backgrounds and as and when their relationship might come out in the open, the reception of the same would vary with their respective family members.
So, when they did actually went public, that both NK and the Raizadas’ were accepting of their relationship despite the initial hesitancy!! I was almost chortling in glee when I read the brewing bromance between NK and Arnav. It was so cute and I literally wanted to pull both of their cheeks.

Now, as we know both Arnav and Khushi love each other, have decided not to get married and move in together. We all knew that what reaction would that garner from both their families and yes, the families didn’t disappoint. Though I felt elated, when I realized that Ashvath and Harika , both were looking out for Khushi more because they knew their son’s decision was going to have a major impact in Khushi’s life. And even NK’s concern for Khushi was justified from a father’s point of view.
But all of them underestimated their children. Khushi and Arnav are way too mature and understanding and the way they have been open with each other about this thing and the way they discussed it through before deciding on the way forward spoke volumes of the trust and comfort that they share with each other. And Khushi took it a notch higher when she went ahead and took a step to make Dadi and Harika understand Arnav’s viewpoint and made them realize that Arnav was also suffering and would need their support at such a vulnerable time

Now only time will tell how things move ahead from here and I, for one, can’t wait to see how this journey progresses.

My rant can’t be complete without mentioning Leia. Oh, she’s a sweetheart!!😍😍 A sweet, independent, fiercely loyal person who has stuck with Khushi through all times, including the ones when Khushi’s family wasn’t there with her. The bond that she shares with Khushi is so pure that it makes me envy to have a friend like Leia with whom you can share each and every joy and grief of yours, who can be a mirror that reflects what one needs to know, who can be as blunt when need arises to tell the person what one might not like to hear and yet have Khushi’s back!! Just Amazing!! I love her too much to not have mentioned her!!

I know I am missing out on few other characters like Aseem, Axel, Ojas, Rayna, Devesh, Eira, Harsh, etc. but I think I will stop for now!
    Some other time… maybe 😉

Till then… Take care, stay safe, stay healthy!!

And looking forward eagerly for the next update.

    Lots Of Love… 🙂 🙂
